While looking through some websites on building stones and their properties, I came across an information that even though low cost marble worktops are a beautiful completion of your kitchen furniture, they may not be as functional as other materials. One website recommended buying marble for your bathroom rather than your kitchen, because there is much less daily wear and tear there and so the marble furnishings will remain intact for a longer period of time. I have to admit that I was quite surprise to hear that for up to that moment I had been convinced that marble and granite not only look similar, but they have the exact same properties. Lately I have receive a confirmation of this information first hand. I visited a friend who purchased her low cost marble worktops a couple of years ago and now she is once again redecorating her kitchen. When asked for the reason, she said that the worktop right next to the cooker broke in half one day. A professional informed her that these low cost marble worktops are much worse at sustaining the daily wear and tear: the heavy shopping bags and pots with food. Not to mention the heat from the cooker. I have to say that I have learned my lesson and I will think of purchasing marble only when I do up my bathroom.
